چکیده

The experiments which led to the discovery of the crossing sensory pathways in the spinal cord, and made Charles-ltdouard Brown-Sequard (1817-1894) famous, established the basis of his theories on the origin of epilepsy. This work is not well-known, but Brown-Sequard's spinal epilepsy remained a clinical entity until the beginning of the twentieth century. He observed that spinal epilepsy could be transmitted to the offspring of animals used in experiments. This artificially induced hereditary epilepsy, although criticized by many, was gratefully accepted by Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and used in his own theories. In this article I examine the development of Brown-Sequard's ideas on epilepsy against the background of contemporary theories of the disease, the nature of heredity and the way the concept was used by Darwin, and the relationship between the two scientists.

Cervical Disc Herniation Causing Brown-Séquard's Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review

Brown-Séquard's syndrome (BSS) is caused by hemisection or hemicompression of the cord leading to ipsilateral motor deficit and contralateral sensory loss. Cervical disc herniation has been reported to be a rare cause of Brown-Séquard's syndrome. We describe a rare case of multilevel cervical disc herniation presenting as BSS. The condition was confirmed by MRI scan. Cervical corpectomy, decomp...

Multifocal Dysembryoplastic Neuroepithelial Tumour with Intradural Spinal Cord Lipomas: Report of a Case

We report a case of temporal lobe epilepsy and incomplete Brown-Sequard syndrome of the thoracic cord. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed multiple supratentorial masses with the classical radiological appearances of multifocal dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour (DNET). Spinal MR imaging revealed intradural lipomas, not previously reported in association with mul...

KCNQ/M currents in sensory neurons: significance for pain therapy.

Neuronal hyperexcitability is a feature of epilepsy and both inflammatory and neuropathic pain. M currents [IK(M)] play a key role in regulating neuronal excitability, and mutations in neuronal KCNQ2/3 subunits, the molecular correlates of IK(M), have previously been linked to benign familial neonatal epilepsy. Here, we demonstrate that KCNQ/M channels are also present in nociceptive sensory sy...

Non-traumatic Causes of Brown-Sequard Syndrome: A Case Series and Clinical Update with Systematic Review.

Background: Brown-Sequard syndrome (BSS) is a rare neurological condition resulting from a hemisection injury to or unilateral compression on the spinal cord. The most common causes of BSS that are amenable to be treated surgically can be divided into traumatic and non-traumatic injuries. Traumatic injuries are often reported as the main cause of BSS. However, non-traumatic injuries of the spin...

A rare case of Brown-Sequard syndrome caused by cervical disc herniation: a case report

Brown-Sequard syndrome is a rare neurological disorder characterized by ipsilateral motor paralysis caused by a lesion through corticospinal tract and contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation due to the involvement of spinothalamic tract. Cervical disc herniation has been reported to be a rare cause of Brown-Séquard's syndrome. This paper aims to report a case of Brown-Sequard syndr...
